Lance was our first dog. He is the reason we like Collies so much. Lance had the best personality. He was calm and gentle but fun to have around. He is also the reason Cindi started working in Animal Rescue.
We went about getting Lance completely the wrong way. But we were young and foolish. We really hadn't planned on getting a dog. We lived in a small apartment above a convenience store and next to a biker bar. We were living in New London, Connecticut. Michael was going to school for the Navy. It was our first apartment and we were expecting our first child.
One day we were just walking through a strip mall. Cindi wanted to visit a small pet store. In one cage was crammed this big Collie. The clerk said he was 6 months old. He wasn't much money and we felt extremely sorry for this big dog smashed in the small cage. So we bought him. I'm sure that's what the store's owners were hoping for.
Lance came with a pedigree and AKC registration but we had him neutered anyway. We figured that a pet store collie wouldn't be much good as a show dog.
We got much more than we bargained for. Lance was a spectacular dog. He was nice, gentle and loyal. He was house trained very quickly. He took to apartment living with ease. We were surprised about this because he was so young and so big.
We found Lance to be great with our children. As they grew he decided they were his responsibility. He guarded and played with them. Lance never complained when they pulled his fur or tweaked his ears. In fact, he seemed to relish this.
We brought Lance with us through several moves. He took each in stride, assuming that wherever his humans were was his home. We moved from Connecticut to South Carolina to Georgia to Washington. Throughout all this, Lance was loyal and true. In Georgia we got Lance a buddy. Echo was his constant companion until the day he died.
In his last days, Lance suffered from Severe arthritis. We tried several medicines but eventually he could no longer stand on all four feet. We eventually had to have him put down. We were all very saddened by this. Lance was such a good dog that we decided to keep with Collies.
