Penne was the sweetest Collie we ever had. With all of her problems, she just liked to snuggle. She never got into any trouble at all.

Penne was the result of a bad breeding for our first litter. She was a double-dilute and one of the few survivors of Paisley's litter. She is the reason we were so careful in choosing the stud for Charlotte. We didn't know anything about double-dilutes except that they were possibly blind and/or deaf. We learned a lot very fast.

Penne was born deaf, with bad eyes and kidney problems. During the first few weeks, one of her eyes was scratched by one of the other puppies. We took her to the vet who was unable to save the eye. So she ended up missing one eye. The other eye looked downwards.

This caused Penne to see and play with invisible friends. She was very funny to watch. She didn't grow very much and was always under-weight. Even with all her problems, we were able to house train her and teach her some basic obedience.

At about six months, her kidneys gave up and we had to put her down. She quickly bloated and became extremely uncomfortable. When we took her to the vet, she had kidney failure that could not be corrected.

Basically we kept her as happy and healthy as we could while she lived. As soon as she could no longer be expected to lead a semi-pain-free life, we had her put down. We were all very sad.

December 2004 Penne passed away from acute, rapid kidney failure
